Title Lundy (A Contained Memory)

From an image taken during a holiday on Lundy. The calm landscape trapped (or protected) by the plastic covering and the chaos of the sea that roared around it – combining ideas of inside/outside and memory/forgetting.

My major influence was the artist Claudio Parmiggiani - especially an untitled artwork from 2005 featuring a blank music sheet with a burn hole in it, with soot to create shadow. Parmiggiani also explores the idea of memory and silence. He quotes -

“Silence is a form of eloquence. A work does not live in silence but within its silence.”

I explored this idea further with blank music sheets and by using pins to replicate musical notes – wondering if the notations could ever be transposed into a musical score. In Lundy (A Contained Memory), strips of paper link to Parmiggiani’s notations and a badge referencing hat pictures formed part of the turbulent scenery. I was also interested in the overpainted photographs of Gerhard Richter and his way of encasing memories with paint.

“The wide-ranging approaches and materials used alongside the live study days helped to improve my confidence when working with a variety of materials. The learning journal helped me to think about my own work (and other artists’ work) more critically, and the landscape module encapsulated the complete process of planning and finishing an artwork.”
