Sarah Counter (Y2)
mixed-media installation
Title The Place
Influenced by the pedestal sculptures of Faith Ringgold whose works celebrated characters from her childhood in Harlem, this three dimensional mixed media installation shares a place which was the formative part of the life of the artist over a seven year period at Roedean School.
Analysing the ‘Bayeux Tapestry’ and ‘Quaker Tapestry’ the artist broadened her knowledge of telling stories through textile and to discover which were the interesting and captivating features.
She recounts her story through transferred photographic images and words onto her old woollen school cloak. Capturing the atmosphere using her old trunk and sports items along with newly printed textiles, painting, batik, poetry and stich work. These were added to provide a multi-sensory experience.
In recreating ‘The Place’ she is sharing part of her life which has brought back hidden memories. The collaborative nature of this work, celebrating the fifty-year anniversary of leaving the school, was an essential driver in its creation and enabled her old friends to share their photos and recollections too. It was publicly displayed in June 2024.
“ Sarah is enrolled onto the BA course in Art and Contemporary Crafts: Materials, Making and Place at West Dean College starting in October 2024.”
