Title The view from here

‘What was great in the morning will be little at evening, and what in the morning was true will at evening have become a lie’
[Carl Jung]

Artistic endeavour is for me a process of exploration and expression of what it means to take our place in life and the universe, particularly psychologically and spiritually.

The work shown here spans the themes of the figure, ‘The view from here’ and ‘Re-place’. The latter explores how we ‘re-place’ each phase of our adult life with another. It ‘re-places’ the representational 16/17th century approach to the ‘Three Ages of Man’ with abstraction. The exploration of change over the phases of adult life reflects personal and archetypal themes.

The first panel explores young adulthood: the bursting forth of energy and tentative new growth.
The second panel explores middle age: the quest/race to establish the (inevitably impermanent) building-blocks of a ‘successful’ life.
In the third panel, older adulthood, the focus shifts to concern with the spaciousness of spiritual life, the disintegration of the body and the impending call of death.

“ The course helped me to develop practices and processes which have helped me to extend my repertoire and grow in confidence as an artist.”
