Title: Behind closed windows
Windows shape how we experience both private and shared spaces, symbolise both connection and separation, and frame our outlook while simultaneously defining our boundaries. Reflecting on the growing need for suitable housing, this project aims to explore how windows, as crucial architectural elements, can either support a sense of belonging or contribute to feelings of isolation.
Inspired by Matisse and Chagall’s use of colour and form to soften harsh architecture, Kerry James Marshall’s critique of social housing design, Edward Hopper’s portrayal of urban isolation, and the aesthetic of Barbara Hepworth’s large works, my final work aims to interrogate the effect of windows on human psyche by initially putting the viewers as voyeur on the outside of a building, gradually bringing them inside people’s lives, culminating in them becoming the ‘observed’ who look through a window into the outside of their own space. It is my attempt to celebrate the variety and complexity of people’s lives and backgrounds within social housing, and breakdown perceived barriers.
