Title: How the Light Gets In
When I heard the brief, it made me wonder what was on the inside, what was the outside protecting, hiding? I thought of a protective mask of perfection, like a suit of armour, and my own history of wearing masks to fit in. I was influenced by Sylvia Plath, by trees and their bark, and by the work of artists such as Njideka Akunyili Crosby.
My line of enquiry altered after doing the 10 drawings of an apple, especially once I’d cut the apple open. I then saw the outside layer as just as vulnerable as the inside, in some ways more so, but also, I realised that for an apple to regenerate, the inside/seeds, need to be exposed. So instead of what does the outside protect, I focused on what does a rupture allow?
The final piece isn’t my usual style - I don’t know if it’s ‘successful’ in appearance, but it felt very cathartic and personal, like a process of rupture and growth in itself, so it was ultimately successful.
