Title A Sky Full of Skylarks

I come from The Chalk.
I grew up in a Downland village a mile from the ancient Ridgeway path on the Berkshire Downs.  The landscape and its footpaths have shaped me.

Kurt Jackson’s work triggered the idea of creating a sense of place at a moment in time. He says he is very aware of “all going on around me while I am painting”.  He likes to include “the beautiful variety of life” by “scrawling on the painting, the plants and animals I experience, am witness to”.

A Sky Full of Skylarks gives the viewer the experience of a moment of time in my special place. Lowbury Hill is a sacred place. Using en plein air sketching for inspiration, the work incorporates words and locally found natural materials to create a joyful moment with a sense of space with a view to the horizon and expanse of sky. In that moment I am aware of the natural details that break my attention – snatches of birdsong, a butterfly or grasses brushing my hand.  I wrote what I heard and saw on my walk up Churn Road to the Ridgeway.

I have a strong link to the location, it's history and wildlife, and will continue to explore this using words, mixed media, natural inks, with found materials.

“I had had very little formal art training before this year.
OFCAD gave me the opportunity to explore different artistic media and methods in a safe and supportive environment. I particularly enjoyed mark making, print-making and mixed media.  It was good to have the personal project to bring it all together.”
