Title Pulled

I am simply and completely pulled to the seashore.

Micheal Porter is an abstract artist who repeatedly visits an outside space, elements of which become the subjects of his work. I was drawn to the sense of movement and the metaphysical in his work, whilst it is at the same time seemingly familiar.

“I don’t paint paintings, I make paintings” - Micheal Porter (Close To The Ground, RWA Art 05, Summer 2011).

I became fascinated how different mediums, composition of line and tone worked together to provide an effect and learnt that paintings can be ‘made’ combining and constructing different elements and not simply ‘painted’. To develop this further, I would work on a larger scale and incorporate found items from the seashore to give a sense of place, and try different emotional effects changing underpaintings.

Knowing is in the doing’ says tutor Chris Gilvan-Cartwright, going forwards I will allow myself more time to develop and experiment before moving onto a final piece. I will spend time reflecting on why I am making particular marks and why they evoke a particular response and follow these enquiries.

“ As the course has progressed and I have been stretched to explore different mediums and techniques, I have been encouraged to explore the unknown. Putting brush in paint, hand in clay, pen on paper, doing the doing, I have found, as I practice and experiment, the beginning of the knowing and enjoyed the exploration. I intend to further explore making mixed media work.”
