Title To Live For Better Days. Self-Portrait

Inspired by Rachel Ruysch’s symbolic hidden meanings, the paintings are a timeline of life through the language of flowers, from birth to set backs and then new beginnings. Plants which grow from bulbs were specifically chosen to show how something quite remarkable can grow from something rather undesirable in appearance, and for this to be an extended metaphor for persevering through hard times. I will continue to develop skills in botanical illustration and floristry and find ways to combine both.

“I have come to accept how I work and why that is. I am more of a detailed
fine artist, as opposed to a bold abstract painter, and this is okay. It reflects my personality and the way I work... This course, for me, was about recovery, gaining a previously unattainable qualification and becoming a more
confident artist. I can truly say all three have been achieved.”
