Title: Jacket Identities – Heavenly, Button Up, Pop, Proud, Jubilee

Jacket Identities considers how to present in a light-hearted way specific identities displayed on the outside. The use of hybrid prints gives physicality to the work, expressing pattern and texture. Collage reinforces this in the form of circles, leading one’s eye to the jackets. Experimental stamping and mixed media bring out the individuality of each jacket. Inspired by John Kiki’s spontaneous way of working…he reflects that his portraits are a mix of imagination, inspiration and chance:

“Sometimes I don’t know what to do so I just put an oval which represents the head, add the neck and carry on until I get an idea – the idea develops from the work.” – John Kiki

Mark-making intrinsically links the figurative to the abstract in this work.  The sheer joy of creating non-figurative works, for instance of changing playing cards into abstract compositions, helped me with the abstract elements of the jackets.

“Future directions will be to continue drawing in public places and to develop some of these with ideas from the course, in particular the printmaking, mark-making and abstraction modules.”
