Title Acceptance and Transformation

Protecting yourself from loss becomes a shield that affects your entire life, sometimes to your detriment.

This artwork depicts the moment that one breaks through that shield, to become vulnerable and open, and able to take a new path of one’s own choosing with a wiser, braver exterior. The sail is symbolic of my own voyage of rediscovery, the silver leaf of self-reflection, and the dividers charting a new direction.

In making the work I was drawn to the apparent simplicity of Tomma Abts work and the repetitive mechanics and devices she uses to create drama and movement. Deliberate layering shows the previous workings underneath; each canvas tells a story within a story.

“In the beginning I was just making shapes. Then began to push it further and further, with traces of many layers beneath. The stuff showing through shows the process – especially around the edges.” (Abts, 2006).

I found a new freedom in not being constrained by what had gone before but letting it be part of the story. The process reflects what my painting is about.

“OFCAD has been about letting go, not being perfect, appreciating what lies beneath. The process informs the creativity, which inevitably comes from endeavour. I’ve regained my confidence with colour and expressiveness and I know I can trust my own ability as an artist.”
