Garden installation made from pallets, ivy, branches and planks of wood, documented in a video of a story being read called She’s Hiding in the Bushes.
Title: Hiding in Bushes

My line of enquiry was: how is hiding in a bush both a place of safety and vulnerability? The installation was inspired by collected stories from more than 20 women about hiding in bushes — some joyful, some uncomfortable — reflecting that tension.

A secret cupboard of books, hidden behind a curtain inside the den, depicted some of those stories. Items like a bowl of milk & cake, a newspaper, the Hand of Fatima, represented other stories.

The 35 participants received a video of a story being read from a booklet about a girl who returns to the same bush — playful as a child, seeking refuge in adolescence, processing big emotions as an adult, and finally creating new life.

My aims were to make contributors feel their stories were valued, and to evoke thoughts and emotions in whoever experienced it.

“On the course I've learnt to get used to going into unknown territory. I’ve learnt to value painting somewhere whilst in situ or from remembered feelings rather than copying a photo. Being physically in a place, responding to it immediately, gives me something I can't get from a photo. Technique and feeling together. I saw this with life drawing too — I get now why it's a thing! And my final project was literally about being in an environment and creating one for others.”
