Globigerina limestone (sculpture maquette)
205mm x 115mm x 80mm
Title: ‘Resonance’

The composition explores the boundary and transition between ‘outside’ and ‘inside’, in the context of Self. We receive sound into our bodies, and we are capable of interpreting, generating, and emitting it in different ways.

A shell is symbolic of the outer self; synonymous with protection and impenetrability. Embedded in the aperture is a headphone bud; a contemporary twist on the acoustic qualities of certain shells. Peter Randall-Page was inspired by my local geology, responding to the fossilised snails contained in Purbeck limestone by carving enlarged shell-like shapes from it. Incorporated into the sculpture is technology which enables it to respond to audio stimuli; receiving sound signals and converting them into movement and reflected light patterns which describe the transcending energy of sound in a dynamic visualisation. This interactive component was inspired by the work of Douglas Hollis (use of “sound to define place, and to make places that stimulate multisensory participation”), and physician Hans Jenny (cymatics).

Although limited by scale, the maquette offers the same tactile qualities of physical sculpture capable of audio-visual interaction with an observer or its acoustic environment. It has interest; inviting engagement in an exploration of its meaning. It also has beauty; exploiting the effortless complexity of nature.
The final piece will measure approximately 650mm x 530mm x 460mm (and weigh approximately 150Kgs). This scale will provide visual presence and physical stability; allowing the sculpture to be touched, without misaligning the laser.

“The focus and structure of this final module has enabled me to explore and develop my initial ideas through more extensive research and experimentation. I feel my work is stronger as a result and the experience has given me confidence to approach future [sculpture] projects with similar rigour”
