Title Ephemeral Nature of Garments

An artist in love with paper.

Shaping, embellishing, patterning and layering paper, from small and intricate works to large three-dimensional pieces, each alluding to sight and touch, whilst exploring the potential of manipulation, form the foundation of my art. Extensively thought through and understated in execution, my work is precise, frequently quirky, regularly in series, and encompasses a limited colour palette. Asking to be touched, handled, shared.

Replace: the ephemeral nature of garments Part One: Wearable
Is paper, a material used for clothing in Japan circa 1700, a viable, sustainable, replacement for current materials? Designing and fashioning a wearable outfit in paper, I employed Japanese methods; kneading, embroidering with paper yarn and incorporating layers of tissue. Breathtakingly light and soft to wear, gently rustling, the pearlescent finish reflecting light.

Ephemeral. Part Two: Memories
Most garments are easily forgotten, but others stay in our minds, a preserved moment attached to an experience. Life size facsimiles of nine student’s favourite garments fashioned in lightweight tissue paper. Each scribed with the owners’ memory in grey ink; the ‘preserved moment’. These ephemeral garments fluttered in the air, shushing together on a rail, and, gently retrieved on their hangers, the memories easily read.
