I go down to the shore

I go down to the shore in the morning
and depending on the hour
the waves are rolling in or moving out,
and I say, oh, I am
miserable,
what shall -
what should I do? And
the sea says
in its lovely voice:
Excuse me. I have work to do.

Title Conversations with the sea

A gentle rendering of the sense of the sea... I am a mixed-media artist investigating my connection with the landscape and myself, exploring how these intersect in tangible form through spontaneous mark-making and print.

By collecting photographic details of what I notice I capture evidence of my experience in the landscape, fleeting moments, pieces of me that I can explore further in the studio. Finding other connections through words and poetry.

Pushing the materials through processes; using expressive mark-making; the work explores memory and experience through gesture;  finding a language to convey this place as something tangible and ephemeral. These abstractions offer a place of restfulness. The process of deconstruction, extraction and reassembly reflects the constant change and flux that is seen in seascapes in one place. Further reducing the images to suggestions of line allows the work to become more diffuse and ephemeral.

‘I think that if you can turn off the mind and look only with the eyes, ultimately everything becomes abstract.’ -Ellsworth Kelly.

Conversations with the sea reflects the dialogue between my senses and the process of depicting such a vast changeable environment.

“ Through doing the work I was able to understand my process. I by-passed my resistance and inner critic to become excited and engaged with doing the work. Perhaps in the end the final project has been a conversation with myself, the ebb and flow of resistance and persistence - finding some peace between them. Next steps will be finding ways to keep challenging myself and keep some momentum; to continue to explore printmaking, abstraction, and deconstruction.”
