Title Ancient Armour

The work represents nature’s way of evolving to protect itself and the human need to manufacture external armour. Referencing my Scottish heritage with its symbols of ‘strength’ and ‘protection’ and the legends behind them such as the Flower of Scotland, and Dutch artists representations of insects and flowers.

Reda Abdel-Rahman uses symbols of his ancient heritage within his work together with use of colour, pattern and different mediums. He uses size and light to draw focus to the main message he wishes to convey.

The metal leaf symbols are a representation of my heritage, they are arranged to mimic sunbeams coming from outside onto the still life subjects. The Tempera on the beetle’s wings gives the effect of texture and translucency.

“I am going to continue to push myself outside of my comfort zone by using new materials, techniques and styles. I have also had to draw from my imagination throughout the course but especially in my personal project - this is something I have struggled with in the past... I am going to allow myself to play and enjoy the process of making art!”
