Title: Movement within stasis
My working life gives me the privilege of working with new families. The reoccurring theme is often around head preferences for the newborn that can result in poor feeding practices and potentially more serious neurological stress or structural issues as the baby develops neonates head is formed with bone between a connective tissue matrix to allow for growth. This built in flexibility also allows for deformation depending on muscle tensions and the surface the baby is placed on and the duration of time the baby remains in one position.
My initial exploration involved drawing to represent both surface and restriction. I was influenced by the artists Heather Spears and Caroline Walker. Both of these artists produced a series of work to depict the fragility of the newborn and the newborn as part of the bigger dynamic of family life. Spears went on to study the newborn in a hospital setting in Copenhagen and produced many graphite drawings to perfect her ability to on represent the newborn form. I did a series of drawings to represent the baby on a variety of surfaces. This felt a more static way to show the dynamic I wanted to explore which led to further refinement of the enquiry.
