Title Summoning Spirit
Summoning Spirit captures an intimate moment as my hands twist the rings in a subconscious ritual that brings comfort and peace. The ripples in the background evoke peace and the interconnectedness of all relationships. Purple represents spirit in the queer community, as I twist the rings and summon the strength of those who have gone before me. The perspective invites the viewer to consider the relationships from my point of view, as well as their own outside perspective.
Multimedia artist Katie Taylor works with ritual meaning, asking which objects we use to comfort ourselves during difficult times. My line of enquiry drew upon Taylor’s idea of “The transformation of the mundane into something imbued with meaning,” (Axis 2025) by focusing on significant personal possessions - my polyamorous commitment rings - asking how society typically interprets these rings in a mono-heteronormative context, versus the personal meaning they hold to me on the inside of the relationships.

“Throughout my OFCAD year, one of the most valuable experiences I gained was following an iterative process of thinking, experimentation and reflection. The course has also given me the skills and confidence to experiment with diverse media: to push the boundaries of what they can do on their own; to mix them in unusual ways; and to use the properties of the media to my advantage to advance the statement of the work.”
